Bible Reading/Text

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord…Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. James 5:13-18

Insight:

A series of questions are put before us concerning suffering, being cheerful or sick.  In all instances we are called to turn to the Lord, be it to pray or praise Him. Indeed, God must be our ultimate solution. Prayer is the essential way we communicate with God. And for the Christian it is vital. Two important points are made throughout our passage today: faith and confession of sin. It is the prayer of faith that is appealing to God and it is also the prayer from a humble heart, one that is quick to confess sins, that God answers. We are given a great example from the life of Elijah the prophet of God. He was a righteous man–not a perfect man—meaning he feared God, he had faith in God, he walked with God, he was consecrated to God. Listen, God never gives up on His own. Confess your sins and come to Him by faith and you will have victory through prayer.
